Its eastern section is famous for a pedestrian street lined with neon signs, department stores and snack shops; farther west, the atmosphere shifts towards luxury malls, designer flagships and the streets around Jing’an Temple.
The road has been a centre of Shanghai commerce since the 19th century, and its historic department stores recall the city’s early embrace of modern retail. Today, the mix of old façades, illuminated signs and relentless foot traffic makes East Nanjing Road as much a place to watch the city as to shop. West Nanjing Road offers a more polished contrast, with quieter side streets worth exploring between the larger malls.
Visit after dark to see the pedestrian street at its brightest, or come in the morning for a less crowded walk. East Nanjing Road and People’s Square metro stations are convenient starting points; allow extra time if you plan to explore the western section as well. Mobile payments are widely used, so setting up Alipay or WeChat Pay before shopping can make small purchases easier.
