Starfield Library brings an unexpected sense of scale to Seoul’s COEX Mall: a vast, light-filled atrium framed by bookshelves rising roughly 13 metres high. Opened in 2017 in Gangnam, this public reading space has become one of the city’s most recognisable interiors, with thousands of books arranged around seating areas and a central walkway.
Part library, part meeting place, it reflects Seoul’s knack for making cultural spaces within busy commercial districts. Visitors come to browse, read and photograph the towering shelves, while talks and other events occasionally add to the atmosphere. It’s worth pausing beyond the famous photo angle to take in the contrast between the quiet reading areas and the movement of the mall around them.
Admission is free, and the library is easy to reach via Samseong Station on Seoul Subway Line 2, which connects to COEX Mall. Visit on a weekday or earlier in the day for a quieter experience; weekends can be crowded.
