N Seoul Tower rises from the wooded summit of Namsan, giving visitors a sweeping view over Seoul’s dense neighbourhoods, the Han River and the mountains beyond. The 236-metre communications tower is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks; its observation deck offers a useful perspective on the sheer scale and geography of the capital.
Built as a broadcasting tower and opened to the public in 1980, it has become a familiar part of Seoul’s skyline and a popular meeting place. Couples leave padlocks on the terrace railings, while families and hikers gather around the plaza. The views are particularly striking as daylight fades and the city lights come on.
You can reach the tower area by Namsan cable car, shuttle bus or on foot along trails through Namsan Park. The cable car stops below the summit, so expect a final climb by steps. The outdoor terraces are free, but the indoor observatory requires a ticket; arrive before sunset for both daytime and evening views, and check the forecast for haze.
