Hongdae is the lively neighbourhood around Hongik University in Seoul’s Mapo district, known for its independent music, art-school energy and late-night streets. Rather than a single attraction, it’s a tangle of shopping lanes, cafés, small galleries and venues where Seoul’s youth culture is both made and consumed.
The area’s creative identity grew around Hongik University, long known for its fine arts programmes, and took shape in the 1990s as artists, musicians and independent clubs found space here. Hongdae has become more commercial since then, but its indie legacy survives in basement gigs, record shops, murals and the buskers who draw crowds along the pedestrian streets.
Visit in the late afternoon to browse the side streets, then stay into the evening for live music and street performances. Hongik University Station is served by Subway Line 2 and the Airport Railroad; check the last train if you plan to stay out late. For a quieter counterpoint to the busiest lanes, wander towards Sangsu or neighbouring Yeonnam-dong.
