The Spanish Steps are one of Rome's most theatrical public spaces — 135 travertine steps cascading down from the church of Trinità dei Monti to the Piazza di Spagna below, designed by Francesco de Sanctis and completed in 1725. Despite the name, they were funded by a French diplomat and connect the French church above to the Spanish Embassy at the base, which is how this corner of Rome ended up with an identity crisis baked into its architecture. The name stuck, the crowds followed, and now it's one of the most visited spots in Europe.
