Rising 42 metres above the centre of Riga, the Freedom Monument is the defining symbol of Latvian nationhood — a slender Art Deco column crowned by a copper woman figure holding three golden stars aloft, representing Latvia's three historical regions: Kurzeme, Vidzeme, and Latgale. Sculptor Kārlis Zāle designed it, and it was unveiled in 1935, funded entirely by public donations, which gives it an emotional weight that state-commissioned monuments rarely carry. The inscription at its base — 'Tēvzemei un Brīvībai' ('For Fatherland and Freedom') — reads less like a slogan and more like a vow.
