Bastejkalns Park is one of Riga's most quietly beloved green spaces, threading along the old city canal between the medieval Old Town and the 19th-century boulevards of the New Town. The park sits on what was once the site of the city's defensive bastions — earthen fortifications that ringed Riga until the mid-19th century, when the city tore them down and transformed the rubble into something far more pleasant.
