Bastejkalns Park is a landscaped green space in central Riga, curving along the City Canal between Old Town and the broad boulevards beyond. Paths climb Bastion Hill and wind past bridges, lawns and water, making the park feel like a small, varied landscape rather than just a shortcut through the city.
The park takes its name and shape from Riga’s former defensive bastions, which were dismantled in the mid-19th century as the city expanded. Today, the Freedom Monument stands at its eastern edge, while memorial stones in the park recall people killed during the January 1991 struggle to restore Latvia’s independence.
Come for a waterside walk, a quiet bench or a detour between Old Town and central Riga. The park is free to enter and easy to explore on foot; allow extra time for the paths over the hill, and wear comfortable shoes if you plan to take the sloping routes. Spring and autumn bring particularly good colour to the canal-side walks.
