Alberta iela is a short street in Riga’s Quiet Centre, celebrated for an extraordinary concentration of Art Nouveau architecture. Its early 20th-century apartment buildings turn a stroll into an exercise in looking up: sculpted faces, mythical creatures, floral motifs and elaborate ironwork crowd the facades.
Much of the street was developed in the first decade of the 1900s, when Riga was growing rapidly and Art Nouveau was reshaping its cityscape. Architect Mikhail Eisenstein designed several of its most theatrical buildings; others, including Konstantīns Pēkšēns and Eižens Laube, contributed to the street’s architectural variety. Alberta iela forms part of Riga’s UNESCO-listed historic centre.
