Perched on a rocky promontory above a wide bend in the Vltava, Vyšehrad is the older, quieter, and arguably more mythologically charged of Prague's two great fortified heights. While Prague Castle gets the tourist hordes, Vyšehrad holds something rarer: a genuine sense of layered time. According to Bohemian legend, this was the seat of the first Přemyslid rulers and the birthplace of Princess Libuše, who prophesied the founding of Prague itself. The reality is that Romanesque rotundas and Baroque ramparts share the plateau with a Slavín cemetery where Dvořák, Smetana, Mucha, and Čapek are buried — a roll call of Czech cultural identity in a single walled enclosure that feels genuinely moving rather than performatively solemn.
