Prague Castle is less a single fortress than a city within a city, spread across a hill above the Vltava. Its courtyards, palaces, churches and gardens cover roughly 70,000 square metres, earning it recognition as the world’s largest ancient castle complex.
Founded in the ninth century, the castle has been a seat of Bohemian rulers, Holy Roman emperors and Czech presidents. St Vitus Cathedral dominates the skyline with its Gothic spires and stained glass, while nearby St George’s Basilica preserves an earlier Romanesque character. The Old Royal Palace and the colourful little houses of Golden Lane add more layers to a visit that spans centuries of Czech history.
Come early to explore the courtyards before the busiest crowds, and allow several hours if you plan to visit the main interiors. Tram 22 offers a convenient approach uphill, leaving you free to walk back down towards Malá Strana.
