Malá Strana

Malá Strana, or Lesser Town, is Prague’s historic neighbourhood on the west bank of the Vltava, tucked beneath Prague Castle. Its cobbled lanes, ochre façades and steep streets give it a distinct character, especially beyond the busy approach to Charles Bridge.

Much of the district was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1541, with aristocratic palaces and churches taking shape over the following centuries. The Baroque Church of St Nicholas dominates Malostranské náměstí with its green dome, while quieter streets reveal courtyards, embassy buildings and traces of the neighbourhood’s residential life.

Come for the architecture and stay to wander: follow the lanes toward the castle, explore the riverside paths around Kampa, or seek out one of the hillside gardens when they are open. Visit early or later in the day to avoid the heaviest Charles Bridge crowds, and wear comfortable shoes for the uneven cobbles and slopes. Tram 22 stops at Malostranské náměstí and is useful for reaching the neighbourhood without climbing from the river.
