Tirrenia

Tirrenia is a seaside neighbourhood of Pisa on the Tyrrhenian coast, roughly 20 minutes’ drive from the city centre. Its wide sandy beaches, low villas and pinewoods offer a change of pace from Pisa’s medieval streets and monuments.

Planned as a modern seaside resort in the 1930s, Tirrenia retains traces of its interwar architecture and orderly layout. It also has a cinematic past: film studios established here in the same decade helped make the resort a centre of Italian film production. Nearby Calambrone has its own legacy of former seaside colonies, built to give children holidays by the sea.

Today, Tirrenia is a place for swimming, beach walks and a leisurely aperitivo by the water. Pinewoods and dunes in the surrounding area form part of the Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Regional Park. In summer, local families gather at the beach clubs, while the quieter months bring a more residential feel.

Buses connect Pisa with Tirrenia, and driving is straightforward, though parking near the beach can fill up on summer weekends. Much of the shore is occupied by paid lidos, so look for free public beach stretches if you prefer not to rent a sunbed. June and September are generally less crowded than July and August; in winter, many beach establishments close.
