Scotto Garden

Scotto Garden (Giardino Scotto) is a leafy public park in Pisa’s historic centre, close to the south bank of the Arno. Set within the walls of a former fortress, it offers a quieter change of pace from the streets around the Leaning Tower, with lawns, mature trees and benches framed by substantial brick fortifications.

The park occupies part of the Cittadella Nuova, built under Florentine rule after Florence conquered Pisa in the early 15th century. Its military defences later gave way to a private garden associated with the Scotto family. The surviving walls and ramparts make the garden a reminder of a chapter of Pisan history that is easy to overlook among the city’s medieval landmarks.

Today, Giardino Scotto is a place to pause in the shade, read or watch local life unfold. The contrast between the greenery and the old fortress walls makes it rewarding for photographs, while summer cultural events can include open-air cinema and concerts.

The garden is within walking distance of Pisa Centrale and pairs well with a stroll along the Arno. Late afternoon is a pleasant time to visit, particularly in warmer months. Check opening hours and event listings before you go, as access can vary, and wear comfortable shoes for uneven paths and steps.
