San Rossore Park

San Rossore Park is a vast coastal estate just northwest of Pisa, where umbrella pines, wet woodland and meadows replace the crowds around the Leaning Tower. Part of the Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Regional Park, it stretches between the Arno and Serchio rivers towards a protected shoreline. Its flat paths and open landscapes make it a rewarding place to walk or cycle beyond the city centre.

The estate has a history. It was a hunting reserve under the Medici and Lorraine grand dukes, later passed to the Savoy royal family and eventually became an estate of the Italian Republic’s presidency. Public stewardship followed in 1999. One unusual chapter dates to the seventeenth century, when the Medici introduced camels to the area; the animals remained part of estate life for generations.

Today, visitors come for the quiet trails, wildlife and sense of space. Look for fallow deer and wild boar in quieter areas, and herons around the wetlands. Guided excursions, bike hire and horse-drawn carriage rides can add context to a visit, though availability varies. The nearby San Rossore racecourse is another reminder of the area’s longstanding equestrian traditions.

Spring and autumn bring mild weather and good conditions for exploring; in summer, carry water and mosquito repellent. The park can be reached from Pisa by bike, bus or car, but check current transport and visitor information before setting out. Some protected areas, including parts of the coast, have restricted or guided access, so follow signs and stay on permitted paths.
