Piazza delle Vettovaglie

Piazza delle Vettovaglie is a lively market square in Pisa’s historic centre, tucked just off Borgo Stretto. Its name refers to provisions, and food remains central to its character: produce stalls fill the open space on market mornings, while shops, cafés and bars occupy the porticoes around the edges.

The square offers a different perspective on Pisa from the monumental Piazza dei Miracoli. Set within a medieval street plan, its arcades and tall, weathered buildings frame a place shaped by everyday commerce. The nearby university adds to the mix, with students joining residents at the bars and tables beneath the arches.

Come in the morning to browse fruit and vegetables and pick up picnic supplies from surrounding food shops. By early evening, Piazza delle Vettovaglie takes on a more sociable mood, making it a good place for an aperitivo and some people-watching before dinner.

For the market, aim to arrive before noon and check ahead if visiting on a Sunday or public holiday, when stalls may be fewer. The square is around a 20-minute walk from Pisa Centrale, across the Arno and along Borgo Stretto, and pairs easily with a visit to Piazza dei Cavalieri.
