Opera del Duomo Museum

The Opera del Duomo Museum (Museo dell’Opera del Duomo) in Pisa is an absorbing complement to the monuments of Piazza dei Miracoli. Its collection brings together sculptures, sacred objects and architectural treasures from the cathedral complex, many moved indoors to protect them from the elements.

The works illuminate Pisa’s wealth and artistic ambition during its years as a maritime republic. Look for sculptures by Giovanni Pisano, including an ivory Madonna and Child, alongside original pieces made for the cathedral and baptistery. The Islamic bronze Griffin, once displayed high on the cathedral roof, is a striking reminder of Pisa’s connections across the medieval Mediterranean.

The museum rewards a slower look than the busy square outside. Carved figures that are difficult to appreciate on a facade can be studied up close, while liturgical objects and textiles reveal the craftsmanship behind the cathedral’s ceremonies. Views toward the Leaning Tower add another reason to linger.

Allow around an hour to 90 minutes, and check seasonal opening hours before visiting. Compare combined tickets for the museum and other monuments in the square; if you also want to climb the Leaning Tower, reserve a timed entry in advance during busy periods. The museum is about a 25- to 30-minute walk from Pisa Centrale station.
