Borgo Stretto

Borgo Stretto is one of Pisa’s most appealing streets, running north from the Arno through the historic centre. Its narrow, arcaded stretch and surrounding lanes are a lively mix of shops, cafés and everyday city life, offering a different perspective from the monumental Piazza dei Miracoli.

The street has been a commercial artery since Pisa’s medieval heyday as a maritime republic. Covered porticoes still shelter shoppers, while old façades and later palazzi reward a glance above the shop windows. Near the southern end, the church of San Michele in Borgo is especially worth a look for its ornate Pisan Romanesque façade.

Come to wander between boutiques, bookshops and pasticcerie, then turn into Piazza delle Vettovaglie, where a produce market brings colour to the old arcades. Stop for cecina, the local chickpea flatbread, or join the early-evening passeggiata before an aperitivo. The nearby university lends the area a student energy, particularly around its bars and side streets.

Morning is a good time for the market and a quieter walk; early evening is livelier. Borgo Stretto is around a 15- to 20-minute walk from Pisa Centrale, and its arcades provide welcome shade or rain cover. Smaller shops may close for a long lunch break or on Sundays, while coffee is usually cheaper taken standing at the bar than at a table.
