Square

Piazza Bellini

Piazza Bellini is a small square in Palermo’s historic centre, a short walk from Quattro Canti and Piazza Pretoria. It brings several eras of the city into view at once: the red domes of San Cataldo, the bell tower of La Martorana and the grand facade of Santa Caterina frame a compact, lively space.

La Martorana and San Cataldo date from the 12th century, when Sicily’s Norman rulers drew on Byzantine, Islamic and Western traditions. Both are part of Palermo’s UNESCO-listed Arab-Norman heritage. Step inside La Martorana to see its remarkable golden mosaics, then visit Santa Caterina for an exuberant contrast of Baroque decoration and coloured marble.

The square rewards an unhurried stop as well as a sightseeing visit. Come in the late afternoon for warm light on the stone and stay for an aperitivo as the centre gets busier; early morning is quieter for photographs. It’s easiest to arrive on foot, since much of the historic centre has traffic restrictions. Check church opening hours before visiting, as they can vary around services and holidays, and some sites charge admission.
