Weißgerbergasse — Tanners’ Lane

Weißgerbergasse, or Tanners’ Lane, is one of the most atmospheric streets in Nürnberg’s old town. North of the Pegnitz River, the narrow lane is lined with colourful half-timbered houses, many of which survived the extensive bombing of World War II. Their projecting upper storeys and timber frames offer a glimpse of the city’s historic streetscape.

The street takes its name from the white tanners who once lived and worked here, treating hides to make soft, light-coloured leather. Today, some of the old houses contain small shops, bars and restaurants, while others remain homes. It is a short street, but worth walking slowly: look up at the varied rooflines and façades rather than treating it as just a photo stop.

Late afternoon is a lovely time to visit, especially when the light warms the timber and plaster. Weißgerbergasse is within walking distance of the Weißer Turm U-Bahn station and makes an easy addition to a wander through Nürnberg’s old town. Pair it with nearby Henkersteg, the covered footbridge over the Pegnitz, and remember that this is a lived-in street: keep voices down and respect residents’ doorways.
