Nürnberg’s Toy Museum, or Spielzeugmuseum, occupies a historic townhouse on Karlstraße in the Old Town. Its collection follows the history of play from early handmade toys to the mass-produced favourites of the 20th century, with dollhouses, miniature shops, tin toys and familiar plastic figures among the displays.
The museum is also a window into Nürnberg’s identity as a centre of toy-making. Local craftspeople and manufacturers supplied toys to markets far beyond the city, and the exhibits show how their work reflected changing tastes, technologies and ideas about childhood. The intricate miniatures are especially absorbing, whether you’re interested in design or simply enjoy peering into tiny worlds.
Allow around two hours to explore, particularly if you’re visiting with children: there are opportunities to play as well as objects to admire behind glass. The museum is an easy walk from Hauptmarkt, making it a convenient stop during an Old Town wander. It is generally open Tuesday to Sunday, but check current opening times and exhibition details before you go.
