Square

Hauptmarkt

Nürnberg’s Hauptmarkt is the central square of the Old Town, a working marketplace framed by landmarks that make it an essential stop on a city visit. The Gothic Frauenkirche overlooks its eastern side, while the ornate Schöner Brunnen rises near the northwest corner, its colourful, spire-like form an unexpected sight among the market stalls.

The square’s history is not entirely celebratory. It was created in the 14th century on the site of a Jewish quarter destroyed during a massacre in 1349. Badly damaged during the Second World War, the area was subsequently rebuilt. Today, the Hauptmarkt remains a gathering place, hosting produce stalls for much of the year and the famous Christkindlesmarkt from late November until Christmas Eve.

Visit on a weekday morning for a quieter look at the market, and stay until noon to see the Frauenkirche’s Männleinlaufen clock send its mechanical figures into procession. At the Schöner Brunnen, look for the brass ring set into the iron railing: local tradition says turning it brings good luck. During the Christmas market, arrive early to explore the stalls before the afternoon crowds build.
