Market

Handwerkerhof

Just across from Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof, Handwerkerhof is a small craft market tucked against the medieval city walls by the Königstor. Half-timbered façades and narrow lanes give the courtyard the feel of an old artisan quarter, though the market itself is a modern creation rather than a preserved medieval neighbourhood.

Handwerkerhof opened in 1971, the year of the 500th anniversary of Albrecht Dürer’s birth. It celebrates Nürnberg’s long history of skilled trades, when the city was a major centre of craftsmanship and commerce. Today, visitors can browse workshops and shops for traditional crafts, jewellery and gifts, and stop for Franconian food or Lebkuchen.

Its compact size makes it an easy first or last stop on a Nürnberg visit, especially if you’re travelling by train. Come on a weekday morning for a quieter browse and a better chance of seeing craftspeople at work; individual workshops keep their own hours. Opening times can be seasonal, and many shops close on Sundays, so check ahead. In the Christmas season, the courtyard offers an intimate complement to the larger Christkindlesmarkt in the Hauptmarkt.
