The Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nürnberg is Germany’s largest museum of cultural history, tracing life and art in German-speaking Europe from prehistory to the present. Founded in 1852, its collection ranges from medieval sculpture and Renaissance painting to scientific instruments, furniture and toys. It’s an unusually rich place to see how everyday objects and grand works of art fit into the same cultural story.

Among the highlights is Martin Behaim’s 1492 terrestrial globe, the oldest surviving example of its kind. Galleries devoted to art, craft and domestic life offer plenty of discoveries beyond the famous pieces, while the museum buildings incorporate part of a former Carthusian monastery. The historic cloister is a welcome change of pace between exhibition rooms.

Allow at least three hours, or choose a few sections in advance if your time is limited: the collections are too extensive to absorb in a quick visit. The museum is within walking distance of Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof and the old town. Check the museum’s website before visiting for current opening hours, exhibitions and admission offers, including Wednesday evening arrangements.
