Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro

Beside Naples Cathedral on Via Duomo, the Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro holds jewels, silverwork, paintings and ceremonial objects offered in honour of the city’s patron saint. Known in Italian as the Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro, it brings together centuries of devotion and craftsmanship in the heart of the historic centre.

The collection grew through gifts from popes, monarchs, noble families and ordinary Neapolitans, often in thanks for the saint’s protection against plague, eruptions and war. Unlike a royal hoard, the treasure has long been guarded on behalf of the city by a lay body, the Deputation of the Chapel of the Treasure, founded in 1527.

The standout is the silver mitre of San Gennaro, covered with thousands of diamonds, rubies and emeralds. Look, too, for the saint’s jewelled necklace, silver busts and elaborate reliquaries, which reveal the skill of Naples’ goldsmiths and silversmiths as well as the enduring place of San Gennaro in local life.

Allow around an hour for the museum, and pair it with a visit to the adjoining cathedral. Check opening times and ticket options before you go, as access to the museum and chapel may differ. If you plan to enter the cathedral or chapel, dress respectfully.
