Piazza Bellini is a tree-shaded square in Naples’ historic centre, where café terraces and bars draw students, musicians and neighbours throughout the day. By evening, it becomes one of the city’s most sociable meeting places: order a drink, find a seat and watch the square fill up.
At its centre, a sunken archaeological area exposes massive tufa blocks from the ancient Greek walls of Neapolis. The square is named for composer Vincenzo Bellini, who studied in Naples and is commemorated by a statue here. The nearby San Pietro a Majella conservatory is another reminder of the city’s musical heritage.
The piazza is worth visiting as much for its atmosphere as its history. Bookshops, cafés and wine bars cluster around it, while the bookselling street by Port’Alba, Piazza Dante and Via dei Tribunali are all within easy walking distance.
Come in the morning for a quieter look at the Greek walls, or in the late afternoon and evening when the terraces are busiest. Dante metro station on Line 1 is a short walk away. Weekend nights can be noisy and crowded, something to consider if booking a room directly on the square.
