Mergellina

Mergellina is a seafront neighbourhood in Naples, set beneath Posillipo hill on the western side of the bay. Its harbour brings fishing boats and ferries together against a backdrop of Vesuvius, while the waterfront offers a slower-paced contrast to the historic centre. It is a good place to see how Naples lives alongside the sea.

Once a fishing village, Mergellina also has a strong literary heritage. The Renaissance poet Jacopo Sannazaro lived and wrote nearby; his tomb is in the Church of Santa Maria del Parto. A short walk inland, Parco Vergiliano a Piedigrotta contains the tomb of Giacomo Leopardi and a monument traditionally associated with Virgil. The nearby Church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta is linked to a historic festival that helped popularise Neapolitan song.

Come for a walk along the waterfront towards Via Caracciolo, stopping for gelato, pastries or seafood near the harbour. In the evening, families and friends gather along the seafront, and the views across the bay are especially good. Mergellina is also a departure point for some island ferries, though routes and schedules vary by season.

Late afternoon is a rewarding time to visit, particularly in spring or early autumn; summer weekends can be busy. Mergellina station is served by Metro Line 2, and the Mergellina funicular connects the area with Posillipo. Check restaurant prices before ordering, and take care crossing the busy seafront road.
