Catacombs of San Gaudioso

The Catacombs of San Gaudioso lie beneath the Basilica di Santa Maria della Sanità in Naples’ Rione Sanità district. This early Christian burial site takes its name from Gaudiosus, a North African bishop traditionally said to have reached Naples after fleeing Vandal persecution in the fifth century. His tomb became a place of devotion, and burial nearby was prized by Neapolitans seeking proximity to a saint.

Fragments of early Christian mosaics survive, but the catacombs are especially memorable for their later funerary art. In the seventeenth century, some skulls were embedded in the walls alongside painted bodies dressed to suggest the deceased’s profession or social standing. The effect is striking: a gallery that brings together religious devotion, status and Naples’ enduringly direct relationship with death.

Visits are guided, giving context to details that are easy to miss in the compact passages. The entrance is through the basilica on Piazza Sanità; check current tour times and book ahead in high season, particularly if you want an English-language tour. Wear comfortable shoes for the uneven floors and bring a light layer for the cool underground spaces. Afterwards, explore Rione Sanità or combine your visit with the nearby Catacombs of San Gennaro.
