Pinakothek der Moderne

Pinakothek der Moderne brings modern art, design, architecture and works on paper together beneath one roof in Munich’s Kunstareal museum quarter. Opened in 2002, its striking building by Stephan Braunfels centres on a light-filled rotunda that gives the four collections a shared meeting point.

The State Gallery of Modern Art ranges from Picasso and Beckmann to Warhol and Beuys, while the Neue Sammlung explores design through furniture, everyday objects and industrial products. Architecture exhibitions and selections from the State Graphics Collection add further perspectives. Moving between a modernist painting and a Braun radio is part of the appeal: the museum invites visitors to see creative ideas crossing disciplines.

Allow at least a couple of hours and check the exhibition programme before visiting, as works on paper and architecture displays change. The museum is generally closed on Mondays; Sunday admission is often reduced, though special exhibitions may cost extra. Tram stops in the Kunstareal and nearby Theresienstraße U-Bahn station make it easy to reach from central Munich.
