Isar River & Flaucher

The Isar River gives Munich something many cities can only imitate: a wild-feeling green corridor within easy reach of the centre. At the Flaucher, a stretch of gravel banks, wooded islands and branching channels south of the city centre, locals come to picnic, cycle, sunbathe and cool off on warm days.

The river’s natural appearance owes much to the Isar’s renaturalisation, which reshaped sections of its banks and restored space for the water to flow more freely. The Flaucher has long been part of Munich’s outdoor culture, and its tree-shaded beer garden is an appealing place to settle in after a riverside walk. On a sunny afternoon, the gravel banks offer as good a glimpse of local life as any formal attraction.

Late spring and summer are ideal for lingering by the water, though fine weekends can get crowded; arrive in the morning for a quieter spot. The river is cold and currents can be deceptively strong, so take care near the water, particularly with children. For a car-free visit, take the U3 to Thalkirchen and walk towards the river; if you plan to barbecue, check local rules and use only permitted areas.
