Squeezed into a narrow plot on Sendlinger Strasse, the Asamkirche — formally the Church of St. Johann Nepomuk — is one of Munich's most extraordinary and least expected interiors. Built between 1733 and 1746, it was conceived as a private chapel by the brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam, who purchased the land next door to live in. The result is a building that was never meant for the public, and it shows: this is Bavarian late Baroque pushed to its absolute limit, a fever dream of gilded stucco, frescoed ceilings, and theatrical lighting engineered to make every surface seem to dissolve into something celestial.
