The Allianz Arena rises above Munich’s northern outskirts like an illuminated spacecraft. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron and opened in 2005, FC Bayern Munich’s stadium is wrapped in inflated ETFE panels that glow red on Bayern matchdays. Its bold exterior makes it worth the trip even for visitors whose interest in football is matched by an appreciation of architecture.
Inside the stadium complex, the FC Bayern Museum traces the club’s history from its founding in 1900 to its status as one of Europe’s most successful teams. Trophies, memorabilia and interactive displays chart sporting triumphs alongside more difficult chapters in the club’s past. Stadium tours add another perspective, with views of the pitch and access to areas such as the players’ tunnel and dugouts, depending on the tour and event schedule.
To visit the Allianz Arena and FC Bayern Museum from central Munich, take the U6 north to Fröttmaning and walk to the stadium. Allow around two to three hours for the museum and a tour, and check opening times and book ahead: access can change around matches and events. If your schedule allows, linger after dusk to see the illuminated facade.
