Vicolo dei Lavandai

Vicolo dei Lavandai is a small historic wash house tucked off the Naviglio Grande in Milan. Beneath a tiled roof, worn stone slabs line a narrow water channel where clothes were once scrubbed by hand. The modest setting offers a glimpse of everyday life in the old Navigli district, away from Milan’s grander monuments.

The alley takes its name from the lavandai, the professional laundry workers who served local households. Their work was part of the life of Milan’s canals, once busy routes for transporting goods as well as sources of water. The surviving wash house preserves a reminder of labour that rarely features in the city’s monumental history.

Today, the contrast with the surrounding bars and restaurants is part of the appeal. Come in the morning or on a weekday for a quieter look and softer light, and allow around 10–15 minutes before continuing along the Naviglio Grande towards the Darsena. Porta Genova on the M2 metro line is a short walk away; watch your footing, as the old surfaces can be uneven or damp.
