San Siro Stadium and Museum offers a look inside one of Milan’s most recognisable landmarks and the shared home of rival football clubs AC Milan and Inter. Officially named Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, the stadium rises in the west of the city, its spiral ramps and red roof girders giving it the presence of an industrial monument as much as a sporting arena.
Opened in 1926 for AC Milan and extensively remodelled for the 1990 World Cup, San Siro has hosted European Cup finals, major concerts and generations of fiercely contested derbies. The museum brings the history of both resident clubs together through shirts, photographs and memorabilia, placing their rivalry within the wider story of Milanese football.
A stadium tour is the best way to appreciate the sheer scale of San Siro. Routes generally include the museum and stands, and may also take in the dressing rooms and players’ tunnel, depending on access. Even without a match in progress, the view across the pitch makes it easy to imagine the noise of a derby night.
Check the official schedule and book ahead, as tour routes and opening hours can change around matches and events. Metro Line 5 stops at San Siro Stadio; allow time for security and walking around the large complex, and expect busy transport after matches and concerts.
