Brera is the kind of neighbourhood that makes you understand why people move to Milan and never leave. The bars along Via Solferino and around Piazzetta del Carmine fill up from around 6pm with a crowd that leans local and creative rather than tourist-heavy. Aperitivo here isn't a gimmick — it's a ritual, and doing it right means arriving without a reservation, ordering a Campari spritz, and seeing where the evening takes you.
Practically speaking, Brera is best explored on foot and rewards aimless wandering over structured itineraries. Arrive on a weekday morning if you want the Pinacoteca without the crowds — it opens at 8:30am and the first hour is genuinely quiet. The neighbourhood sits within easy walking distance of both Castello Sforzesco and the Moscova metro stop on Line 2, making it simple to link into a broader day across the city.
