Miglionico and Malconsiglio Castle

Malconsiglio Castle rises above the hilltop town of Miglionico, around 25 to 30 minutes by car from Matera. This medieval fortress is a worthwhile detour from the Sassi, with towers, thick walls and views across the Bradano valley and Basilicata’s rolling hills.

The castle’s name, meaning “bad counsel”, recalls the Conspiracy of the Barons. In 1485, powerful southern Italian nobles met here as they plotted against Ferdinand I of Aragon, King of Naples. The revolt ultimately failed, but the episode remains central to the castle’s identity and gives its old halls a particular sense of intrigue.

A visit pairs history with a quieter glimpse of life beyond Matera. The castle also hosts exhibitions and cultural events, while Miglionico’s compact old centre is pleasant to explore on foot. Look for the celebrated polyptych by Cima da Conegliano in the Chiesa Madre, an excellent complement to the castle for art lovers.

A car is the easiest way to reach Miglionico; bus services are limited, so check schedules if travelling by public transport. Confirm castle opening hours and interior access before setting out, as they can change with the season or events. Wear sturdy shoes for the steep streets and uneven stone, and consider visiting in spring or autumn when temperatures are milder.
