La Palomba Rock Church and Sculpture Park

La Palomba Rock Church and Sculpture Park brings together two sides of Matera: its centuries-old tradition of worship in the rock and its more recent appetite for contemporary art. On the northern outskirts of the city, the church and open-air sculptures sit among the pale stone and scrub of the Murgia landscape, away from the busiest Sassi viewpoints.

Rock-hewn churches are part of the cultural fabric of Matera, where religious communities carved chapels and dwellings into the soft local stone over many centuries. La Palomba offers a quieter way to encounter that history, while the sculpture park adds a striking modern layer to a landscape shaped by stoneworking and faith.

Come for the contrast between carved spaces and monumental sculpture, and allow time to take in the terrain rather than rushing through. In the softer light of morning or late afternoon, the stone takes on warmer tones and shadows bring out its textures.

Check opening arrangements locally before setting out, as access can vary. Wear sturdy shoes for uneven ground and bring water, especially in warm weather. The site is a short taxi ride from central Matera; if walking, be prepared for slopes and exposed stretches.
