MIB — the Immersive Museum of the Bruna — brings Matera’s most cherished festival indoors through projection, sound and multimedia storytelling. Rather than presenting the celebration as a collection of objects, the museum introduces visitors to its rituals, noise and devotion.
The Festa della Madonna della Bruna takes place every 2 July in honour of Matera’s patroness. Its centuries-old traditions include a procession of shepherds, horsemen and an elaborate papier-mâché triumphal cart made anew by local artisans. The day culminates in the assalto al carro, when the crowd tears the cart apart and carries away fragments for luck.
MIB is particularly worthwhile if you’re visiting Matera outside festival season: it gives context to a celebration that is central to local identity and offers a glimpse of the living community beyond the famous Sassi. Families and visitors who prefer storytelling to traditional displays may find it an engaging introduction before exploring the historic quarters.
The museum is best reached on foot from the historic centre; wear comfortable shoes for Matera’s uneven stone streets and slopes. It is also a useful indoor stop during summer heat or rainy weather. Check current opening hours and ticket details before visiting, and book accommodation well ahead if you plan to be in Matera around 2 July.
