Church of San Pietro Barisano

The Church of San Pietro Barisano is one of Matera’s largest rock-hewn churches, set among the lanes and stone houses of the Sasso Barisano. Its relatively plain façade gives little away: inside, chapels and arches are carved into the soft limestone, creating a cool, shadowy space that feels inseparable from the city around it.

The church has medieval origins and was enlarged and altered over several centuries, with its present façade largely dating from the 18th century. Fragments of frescoes and the remains of carved altars hint at its long religious life. Below the church, a burial chamber contains stone seats used in a historic funerary practice in which bodies were left to drain before burial—a stark reminder of the customs once woven into life in the Sassi.

San Pietro Barisano rewards a slower look, both for its atmospheric interior and for the walk through the surrounding district. Reach it on foot from the historic centre, allowing time for steep steps and uneven paving; sturdy shoes are useful. Check opening hours and ticket arrangements locally, as they can change, and bring a light layer for the cool interior.
