Church of San Domenico

The Church of San Domenico stands just off Piazza Vittorio Veneto, between Matera’s modern centre and the ancient Sassi. Built by the Dominican order in the 13th century, its pale stone façade, carved portal and rose window offer a striking example of the city’s medieval architecture.

While Matera is best known for its rock-hewn churches and cave dwellings, San Domenico tells a different part of the city’s story. The church reflects the presence of a preaching order connected to religious life across southern Italy. Alterations over the centuries have left an interior that blends periods and styles rather than preserving a single medieval look.

Visit for a quiet pause during a walk through central Matera, and allow a few minutes to study the façade’s carved details. Check opening times locally before planning to go inside, as access may vary, and dress respectfully if entering the church. Its location beside Piazza Vittorio Veneto makes it easy to combine with a walk to the Sassi viewpoints.
