Church of Purgatory

The Church of Purgatory (Chiesa del Purgatorio) is a small Baroque church on Via Ridola in central Matera, a short walk from the edge of the Sassi. Its curved stone facade is hard to miss once you notice the skulls, bones and other symbols of mortality carved around the entrance.

Built in the 18th century for the Confraternity of Purgatory, the church reflects a tradition of praying for souls believed to be awaiting salvation. Its macabre decoration belongs to the memento mori tradition: a reminder of death intended to encourage reflection on how to live. In a city famous for cave dwellings and rock-cut churches, it offers a different perspective on Matera’s religious history.

Take time to examine the doorway and its carved details before stepping inside, where the compact interior contains altars and sacred art. Opening hours can be limited or irregular, so check locally before making a special trip. The church is easy to combine with a walk along Via Ridola, but wear comfortable shoes for Matera’s uneven streets and be discreet with photography inside.
