Big Ben is technically the Great Bell inside Elizabeth Tower, although the name is commonly used for the entire clock tower at the Palace of Westminster. Rising above the Thames, the Gothic Revival landmark has been a fixture of London’s skyline since 1859, its four illuminated clock faces and deep chimes recognised around the world.
The tower was built as part of the rebuilt Palace of Westminster, designed by Charles Barry with Gothic detailing by Augustus Pugin. It was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. A major restoration completed in 2022 returned its clock faces to their original Prussian blue and gold colour scheme.
For a classic view, cross Westminster Bridge and look back towards the tower and Houses of Parliament; Parliament Square offers another perspective from the landward side. Guided tours of Elizabeth Tower are available but should be booked well in advance through the UK Parliament website. The climb to the belfry involves 334 steps, so check the tour’s access requirements before booking.
