The Jerónimos Monastery is Lisbon's most spectacular monument and one of the finest examples of Manueline architecture anywhere in the world. Built in the early 16th century on the orders of King Manuel I, it was funded largely by profits from the Portuguese spice trade with India — a fact that feels almost absurdly fitting given how much richness and detail has been packed into every surface. The cloisters alone are worth the trip: two storeys of intricately carved limestone, twisting with ropes, armillary spheres, coral, and exotic flora, all glowing honey-gold in the afternoon light. It's the kind of architecture that rewards slow looking rather than speed.
