Old Town Hall

Leipzig’s Old Town Hall stretches along the eastern side of the Marktplatz, its long Renaissance façade and off-centre tower making it one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Built in 1556–57 under mayor Hieronymus Lotter, it reflects the wealth and ambition of a city shaped by trade fairs and commerce.

For centuries, the building was the seat of Leipzig’s municipal government. Today it houses the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig, where historic rooms and exhibitions explore the city’s past. The grand banqueting hall is a highlight, while the arcades beneath the façade connect the monument to the everyday life of the square.

Come early for a quieter look at the exterior, or visit during the Christmas market to see the hall framed by stalls and lights. The Marktplatz is about a ten-minute walk from Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, and Markt S-Bahn station is close by. Check the museum’s current opening hours before planning an interior visit.
