Naschmarkt is a small historic square tucked behind Leipzig’s Old Town Hall, just off the main Markt. Quieter and more intimate than its larger neighbour, it offers a close-up view of the city’s trading past amid the lanes and passages of the old centre.
The square’s standout building is the Alte Handelsbörse, a late-17th-century Baroque exchange where Leipzig’s merchants once did business. In front stands a bronze statue of a young Goethe, who studied in Leipzig. Nearby, the Mädler Passage leads to Auerbachs Keller, the historic restaurant immortalised in a scene from Faust.
Naschmarkt is an easy stop on a walk through central Leipzig, whether you come for the architecture or simply to pause between the busier shopping streets. Visit on a weekday morning for a quieter look, or around midday for more street life. The square is roughly a ten-minute walk from Leipzig Hauptbahnhof and close to Markt S-Bahn station; allow time to explore the surrounding passages too.
