Leipzig’s Market Square, known locally as the Markt, has been the city’s civic and commercial centre for centuries. Its defining landmark is the Renaissance Old Town Hall, built in 1556–57, whose long façade and arcades give the square much of its character. Merchants gathered here during Leipzig’s historic trade fairs, helping establish the city as a major European trading centre.
The square is still a place to gather rather than simply admire. Seasonal markets and public events fill the space throughout the year, while Leipzig’s Christmas market brings wooden stalls and festive lights from late November into December. The surrounding streets are worth exploring too: Grimmaische Straße leads towards the Mädler Passage, a historic shopping arcade with cafés and restaurants.
Come early for a quieter look at the Old Town Hall, or visit in the evening when the cafés around the square are livelier. Event days can be crowded, so check the city calendar if you prefer an unobstructed view of the architecture. Markt S-Bahn station has an entrance on the square, and Leipzig’s main railway station is within walking distance.
