Mädler Passage is a grand covered shopping arcade in the heart of Leipzig’s old town, just steps from Markt. Built between 1912 and 1914, its glass-roofed galleries, ornate facades and polished floors recall the city’s heyday as a European trading centre. Today, boutiques and restaurants occupy the historic space, making it as rewarding for an architectural wander as for shopping.
The passage stands on the site of the former Auerbachs Hof, home to the wine cellar that became Auerbachs Keller. The restaurant traces its history to 1525 and appears in Goethe’s Faust, where Mephistopheles takes Faust on a lively visit. Bronze sculptures near the cellar entrance bring characters from the play into the arcade; look for the polished patches left by generations of visitors.
Allow time to explore the galleries rather than heading straight for the cellar. Weekday mornings are generally quieter, while weekends bring more activity. The passage opens onto Grimmaische Straße and is an easy walk from Markt; check the arcade’s and restaurant’s opening hours separately, and reserve ahead if you plan to dine at Auerbachs Keller.
