City-Hochhaus Observation Deck

The City-Hochhaus Observation Deck gives you a sweeping view over Leipzig from the top of one of its most recognisable buildings. On Augustusplatz, the tower rises above the Gewandhaus and Leipzig Opera, putting the compact old town, surrounding neighbourhoods and green spaces into perspective.

Completed in 1972 during the GDR era, the high-rise was originally built for Leipzig University. Its distinctive shape earned it the local nickname Weisheitszahn, or wisdom tooth. Today, the building is a landmark of Leipzig’s modernist architecture and a reminder of the city’s socialist-era redevelopment.

The panorama is reason enough to visit: look down on the streets and church towers of the centre, then out towards the flatter Saxon landscape. Choose a clear day for the best visibility, or come near sunset to watch the city lights appear. Check opening hours before you go, as access can change, and bring a little cash or a payment card for the admission fee. The tower is easy to reach on foot from the city centre or by tram to Augustusplatz.
