Student Prison — Studentenkarzer

Heidelberg’s Student Prison, or Studentenkarzer, offers an unusual glimpse into university life in the Old Town. Tucked behind the Old University on Augustinergasse, its small cells held students disciplined for offences ranging from drunkenness to disturbing the peace. The prison remained in use until 1914, a vestige of the university’s historic authority over its students.

Confinement became something of a badge of honour, and generations of inmates left their mark on the walls and ceilings. Silhouettes, fraternity insignia, poems and names overlap in a dense record of student pride and mischief. Some students were permitted to attend lectures while serving their sentences, returning to the prison afterwards.

The Studentenkarzer is a short walk from Hauptstrasse and pairs well with the neighbouring University Museum. Allow around an hour for both, and check current opening hours and ticket arrangements before visiting. The rooms are small, so a weekday morning can be a good time to linger over the graffiti with fewer visitors.
