Heidelberg’s Schlangenweg, or Snake Path, is a steep, zigzagging footpath on the north bank of the Neckar. It climbs from near the Old Bridge to the Philosophenweg, with views opening between stone walls and greenery over the river, Heidelberg’s old town and the castle.
The path winds up the southern slope of the Heiligenberg, a hillside long shaped by vineyards and gardens. It connects with the Philosophers’ Walk, a route traditionally associated with Heidelberg’s scholars and celebrated for its views across the valley. The Schlangenweg makes the approach to that panorama part of the experience: each turn offers a slightly different angle on the city below.
Start near the northern end of the Old Bridge and follow signs for the Schlangenweg and Philosophenweg. The climb is short but steep, with steps and uneven paving, so wear comfortable shoes and take care after rain. Once at the top, continue along the Philosophers’ Walk for more viewpoints, or retrace the path downhill.
