Heidelberg’s Old Town (Altstadt) stretches along the south bank of the Neckar River, beneath the ruins of Heidelberg Castle. Its lanes, baroque façades and stone-paved squares make it a compelling place to wander, but it is also a working university neighbourhood, with students, bookshops and cafés woven into the historic streets.
Much of the Old Town was rebuilt after destruction in the late 17th century and survived the Second World War largely intact. Heidelberg University, founded in 1386, gives the area much of its character; the historic university buildings and former student prison offer a glimpse into its academic past.
Start at Marktplatz, beside the Church of the Holy Spirit, then follow the pedestrianised Hauptstrasse past shops and restaurants. Cross the Old Bridge for views back towards the castle, or climb to the Philosophenweg on the opposite hillside for a wider panorama of the river and Old Town.
Visit on a weekday morning to enjoy the streets before the busiest tour groups arrive, especially in summer. The Old Town is easy to explore on foot and can be reached by public transport from Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof; parking nearby can be expensive. Allow a few hours for the centre, and wear comfortable shoes if you plan to tackle the steep paths towards the castle or Philosophenweg.
